What It Is

Where solid surface comes from.

Solid surface (the category that includes brands like Corian) is a fully engineered material — typically about two-thirds natural minerals blended with roughly one-third acrylic or polyester resin, poured into sheets. Unlike stone, it isn't quarried at all; every sheet is manufactured to a consistent formula, which is exactly why seams can be bonded with color-matched epoxy until they're virtually invisible.

Durability

How it holds up.

Solid surface is non-porous and holds up well to daily wear, but it's genuinely softer than granite, quartz, or quartzite — scratches and even minor burns from hot cookware are the most common complaints. The upside of that softness is real: unlike stone or quartz, solid surface can usually be sanded and buffed back to like-new condition rather than replaced.

Care & maintenance: Daily cleanup is simple soap and water. Always use a trivet — solid surface can scorch or discolor from a hot pan straight off the stove. Light scratches can be buffed out with an abrasive pad; deeper damage can be professionally sanded and refinished.
Good to know: The ability to fully repair solid surface — sanding out scratches, burns, and even stains — is its single biggest practical advantage over stone or quartz, which generally can't be restored the same way.
Weighing It Up

Pros & cons.

What we love

  • Virtually invisible seams — a genuinely monolithic look
  • Fully repairable: scratches, burns, and stains can be sanded out
  • Non-porous and hygienic, popular in healthcare settings
  • Lower price point than most natural stone or quartz

Worth knowing

  • Softer than stone or quartz — more prone to scratches and dents
  • Not fully heat-resistant — hot pans can scorch the surface
  • Can look less premium than natural stone up close
  • May feel and sound different underhand than real stone
Common Questions

Solid Surface FAQ.

Is solid surface the same as Corian?
Corian is the best-known brand name for solid surface material, similar to how Kleenex refers to tissues generally — there are other solid surface brands as well, and we can discuss options at consultation.
Can solid surface scratches actually be fixed?
Yes — this is solid surface's signature advantage. Light scratches buff out with an abrasive pad, and deeper damage can be professionally sanded and refinished to look new again.
Is solid surface a good choice for a kitchen?
It works well for kitchens with moderate use, especially when paired with an integrated sink for a seamless look. For a very high-use cooking kitchen, granite or quartz will hold up with less babying.
How does solid surface compare to quartz in price?
Solid surface is typically less expensive than quartz, making it a popular choice for bathroom vanities and budget-conscious kitchen projects.
