What It Is

Where soapstone comes from.

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock built primarily around talc — the same mineral that gives it a soft, soapy feel when you run a hand across it (hence the name). Commercial countertop-grade soapstone is typically 30–50% talc, with the remainder made up of harder minerals like chlorite and magnesite; the lower the talc content, the harder the slab. True soapstone is technically called steatite, and its low thermal expansion is exactly why it's been used in wood stoves and fireplace surrounds for generations — it simply doesn't crack from repeated heating and cooling the way most stone does.

Soapstone countertop
Durability

How it holds up.

On the Mohs scale, soapstone typically runs 2.5 to 4, softer than granite or quartzite, and it will show scratches with everyday use. What makes it work as a countertop anyway is that soapstone is naturally non-porous — it doesn't stain, doesn't need sealing, and is inherently resistant to bacteria and acids. Scratches aren't really a flaw here; they blend into the surface over time as the stone develops a deepening patina, especially with periodic mineral oil or beeswax treatments.

Care & maintenance: No sealing, ever — that's soapstone's built-in advantage. Most owners apply mineral oil every few weeks at first (tapering off over time) to even out and deepen the natural patina. Light scratches can simply be sanded out if you ever want a fresher look, which isn't true of most other stones.
Weighing It Up

Pros & cons.

What we love

  • Naturally non-porous — never needs sealing
  • Genuinely exceptional heat resistance
  • Develops a rich, deepening patina that many owners love
  • Scratches can be sanded out — a repairable surface, unlike most stone

Worth knowing

  • Softer than other stones — will show scratches with daily use
  • Limited color range — typically gray tones that darken over time
  • Requires periodic oiling to maintain the look most people want
  • Not all 'black soapstone' sold commercially is true steatite — ask about sourcing
Common Questions

Soapstone FAQ.

Does soapstone really never need sealing?
Correct — soapstone is naturally non-porous, which is unusual among natural stones. It doesn't absorb liquids the way granite or marble can, so sealing simply isn't part of its maintenance.
Will soapstone scratch easily?
Yes, more easily than granite or quartzite, since it's a softer stone. Most owners find this becomes part of the material's appeal rather than a problem — scratches blend into the developing patina, and deeper ones can be sanded out.
Is soapstone good near a fireplace or wood stove?
It's one of the best choices for exactly that application — soapstone's low thermal expansion means it resists cracking from repeated heating and cooling far better than most other stones.
