Matte, moody, and naturally non-porous. Everything you need to know before choosing slate for your kitchen, bath, or vanity project.
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from compressed shale or mudstone, giving it a naturally layered structure and a distinctive matte, low-sheen surface unlike any polished stone. Color runs from classic charcoal and black through green, purple, and blue-gray tones depending on the quarry.

Durability varies more by quarry and grade than with granite or quartz — high-grade slate is dense, non-absorbent, and genuinely tough, while lower-grade imported slate can be softer and more prone to flaking along its natural layers. Quality slate resists heat exceptionally well (it formed under real geological heat and pressure) and, being low-porosity, resists staining better than many natural stones.
