What It Is

Where porcelain comes from.

Porcelain slab countertops are made from refined clay, feldspar, and silica, fired at extremely high temperatures until fully vitrified into a dense, glass-hard surface. It's the large-format, full-body evolution of porcelain tile — rather than a thin glaze over a softer base, the color and pattern typically run through the entire thickness of the slab.

Durability

How it holds up.

Porcelain lands around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale with essentially zero porosity, and it's one of the most heat-tolerant countertop materials available, rated to withstand temperatures up to roughly 1,000°F without damage — well beyond quartz's resin-limited ceiling. Its main vulnerability is impact rather than scratching: because slabs are relatively thin, a sharp, hard blow to an unsupported edge or corner can chip or crack the material.

Care & maintenance: Porcelain is about as low-maintenance as countertops get — no sealing, ever, and it resists stains, scratches, and heat better than almost anything else on the market. Simple soap and water handles daily cleanup.
Good to know: Porcelain and "sintered stone" are largely marketing terms for closely related materials — if a supplier uses either term, ask directly about the slab's specific thickness and edge-support requirements, since thinner slabs need more careful installation support.
Weighing It Up

Pros & cons.

What we love

  • Exceptional heat resistance — among the best of any material
  • Essentially zero porosity — outstanding stain resistance
  • UV-stable, making it a strong outdoor kitchen option
  • Large-format slabs mean fewer visible seams

Worth knowing

  • Can chip or crack at unsupported edges under hard impact
  • Fewer fabricators are experienced with it than granite or quartz
  • Premium pricing, comparable to or above quartzite
  • Edge profiles are more limited than natural stone
Common Questions

Porcelain FAQ.

Is porcelain the same as sintered stone?
The terms are often used interchangeably in the industry; both describe dense, high-fired mineral slabs. Ask your fabricator about the specific product's exact composition and thickness.
Can I put a hot pan directly on porcelain?
Yes — porcelain's heat resistance is one of its strongest properties, tolerating temperatures well beyond what quartz or solid surface can handle.
Is porcelain more fragile than granite?
In terms of chipping at an unsupported edge, yes, since slabs are thinner — proper installation with adequate support is important. Its surface hardness and scratch resistance are comparable to or better than granite.
Is porcelain good for an outdoor kitchen?
Yes — its UV stability and near-zero porosity make it a strong outdoor option alongside granite and Dekton.
